Masterclass vs. Reality: Where's the Biggest Disconnect in Getting Greenlit?
Hey everyone,
I'm Haley Bergstrom, a working screenwriter, and I've been diving into a lot of the 'Development & Packaging Masterclass' type courses recently. They paint a really clear, almost formulaic path to getting a project greenlit, perfect pitch, ideal package, clear market. It's inspiring, but it also feels... neat.
My real-world experience, especially recently trying to push my character-driven indie horror feature, 'Rust Belt Ghosts,' through development, has been anything but neat. We had a great initial reception, but then a major streaming platform shifted its content strategy mid-discussion, and suddenly, our 'perfect' package felt less compelling to them. It felt like everything I thought I knew got thrown out the window.
So, for those of you who've been around the block, where do you find the biggest disconnects between this 'ideal' masterclass process and the genuinely messy, unpredictable reality of actually getting a film made, particularly when unexpected production hurdles or market changes hit? What's the biggest missing piece those courses don't often cover?
