Establishing a Look When No Show LUT Exists?

Hey everyone, I'm a music composer, but I'm trying to wrap my head around color workflow from the other side, specifically when there's no early colorist involvement.

I'm on an indie narrative project right now shot on an AMIRA and some C70s. The director has some general vibes in mind but no definitive look has been established, and no show LUT was created during production. The footage is coming to a colorist now, deep into post. I'm wondering, for those of you who work with color, how do you approach establishing a distinct visual style in situations like this? Are there specific questions you ask, or references you request to quickly dial into what the director wants? What’s your process from scratch without that established baseline?
