Picture Lock Breaks: Real-World Pressures & Damage Control?

Hey everyone,

I'm Ji-Hoon, a VFX Sup currently wrangling a feature film that's heavy on plate extensions and creature work. Every guide, every senior supervisor, warns against breaking picture lock like it's the plague, and for good reason, I get it. We've gone to extreme lengths on my current project to pre-viz shots using an ALEXA Mini and even shot some tricky sequences on a V-RAPTOR XL with timecode from our Sync E unit, all to nail timing and prevent late changes.

But let's be real, it happens. What are the actual pressures you've faced that led to a picture lock break, despite everyone's best intentions? And when it's genuinely unavoidable, what are your most effective, go-to strategies for mitigating the damage and costs to your VFX team?
