When does the '12-month roadmap' hit reality in freelance filmmaking?

Hey fellow filmmakers,

I'm Jordan Kemp, an aerial DP, and I've been wrestling with how to best plan out my year. There are tons of resources out there, often outlining a neat 12-month roadmap for business growth, Q1 focus on marketing, Q2 on skill-building, etc. It all sounds great on paper, very 'textbook' efficient.

My reality, though, is often a scramble. One month I'm flying an ALEXA 35 on a commercial, the next I might be scouting remote locations with my LUMIX S1H for a documentary, then suddenly a last-minute feature calls for the ALEXA Mini. Projects rarely align with a pre-set schedule, and often dictate what skills I need to hone right now or what gear acquisitions (like maybe another Orbiter or some Helios Tubes) become critical. Sometimes I'm just trying to keep my Sync E modules charged and ready to go.

So, my question is: When does this structured 12-month approach inevitably break down in the unpredictable world of freelance filmmaking, and more importantly, how do you all adapt your long-term planning to that inherent chaos?
