Theatrical Window for Indies in 2026: When is it Still Right?

I'm Liam, a focus puller, and this has been on my mind. There's a lot of talk lately, and what I've been seeing in practice, that putting an indie film in theaters first is largely a losing battle outside of big studio fare. The conventional wisdom leans heavily towards digital-first or hybrid releases for most projects we work on.

I just wrapped a smaller feature, shot on an ALEXA Mini with a set of Cooke S4s, that's currently in post. The director is really passionate about the big screen experience, and it got me thinking. We've had a few shorts play festivals and then go straight to VOD or stream, which made sense for those.

But are there any specific scenarios, even in 2026, where a traditional, exclusive theatrical window could still be the smart strategic move for an independent film? Beyond just having a passion project, I mean. What kind of film, budget, or circumstances would make that a viable path today?
