Contract Review in Indie: When to Ditch the Broker & What's the Backup?

I’m Kyle Therrien, a colorist, and I've been wrestling with something. The general advice, especially for freelancers like me, is always to have a broker or legal professional review every contract before signing. And I get it, that's the smart, textbook move. For bigger gigs, like a recent commercial where we were grading footage shot on an ALEXA 35 and VENICE 2, absolutely. It's a no-brainer.

But in the indie world, things move so fast. I'm talking about those quick turnarounds on a music video shot on a KOMODO, or a short film that came in hot after being shot on a C70. Sometimes a producer needs me to jump on something yesterday, and waiting even a day or two for a broker review just isn't an option. It can genuinely mean losing the job.

I’ve tried having a boilerplate agreement, but every project has its quirks. I'm trying to balance protecting myself with not being the bottleneck. When do you all feel that 'textbook' step of a full broker review just isn't feasible, and what’s your go-to 'plan B' for ensuring you're reasonably covered without holding things up?
