LED Volume Interactive Light: When Does It Actually Fail?

Hey everyone,

I'm Derek, a 1st AC, and I've been wrestling with a concept. The common wisdom, and what I keep reading, is that LED volumes provide incredible interactive light (ambient, reflections, even key or fill. On our last commercial shoot using a volume (we were running an ALEXA Mini with Supremes), the DPs were still bringing in a lot of traditional units) SkyPanel X, LS 1200d Pro, even a few Orbiters, for what felt like pretty fundamental lighting. We spent a good chunk of time rigging.

My question is, what are the real-world scenarios where the volume's interactive light just isn't enough, or simply falls short, necessitating significant intervention with traditional lighting gear? I'm genuinely trying to understand the limitations beyond just the theoretical.

Thanks in advance for any insights!
