Interview/Observational Workflow: Your Personal Hybrid Techniques?
Hey everyone, I'm Brianna, a busy Casting Associate, and I'm genuinely curious about something. When it comes to interviewing and observational capture, there are some pretty well-defined approaches out there, like what Wiseman does with his immersive, unobtrusive style, or the direct, eye-line connection you get with an Interrotron. I've found myself trying to combine elements in my own work.
For a recent docu-series, we were looking for incredibly authentic, uncoached reactions, but also needed certain narrative points to be hit. I experimented with long-form, vérité-style observation, almost trying to disappear, but then used moments where I'd subtly guide the conversation back to key themes, not unlike a more direct interview, though without a monitor setup. It felt like I was mashing up different philosophies.
So, my question for all of you is: how have you personally adapted or blended these more formal techniques (or others you've encountered) to create your own unique interview and observational workflow? What works best for you in different scenarios?
