Beyond the Line Items: When Budget Templates Miss the Mark (Soft Costs)

Hey everyone, Sofia Reyes here, working on a pretty complex feature, lots of unique locations. I've always relied heavily on standard budget templates (the ones that break down permits, location fees, mileage, scouting days, etc.) and they've generally served me well. But lately, I'm finding myself increasingly worried about what they DON'T cover. Specifically, these 'soft costs.'

I'm talking about things like E&O insurance, those inevitable legal consultations for tricky access agreements, or even the dreaded audit preparation if we're dealing with public funds or intricate tax credits. These aren't line items I typically see on a location budget, but they're absolutely real costs that can blindsight a production.

My question is, when do you find a standard budget template truly fails to capture the full picture? And more importantly, how do you practically account for these hidden soft costs in your own location budgets without just pulling numbers out of thin air? Any strategies or experiences would be hugely helpful.
