AI & the 1st AD: Manager or Scheduler?
Hey everyone, Kevin here. I'm gearing up for a new independent feature, and I've been experimenting with some AI scheduling prototypes. We're talking basic stuff, feeding it scene breakdowns, cast availability, location hold dates, and it spits back pretty coherent schedules. It’s certainly faster than my old spreadsheet methods, and it flags potential conflicts I might miss. This has me wondering something big about our role.
Traditionally, a huge part of being a 1st AD is that intricate dance of building the schedule, the 'how' and 'when' of everything. But if AI is tackling the raw optimization, crunching numbers and spitting out efficient daily plans, what does that mean for us? Are we moving away from the manual, line-by-line scheduling and more towards a strategic oversight role, evaluating and finessing an algorithm's output? I'm genuinely curious to hear how others are thinking about this evolution.
