Financing when founders lack 'skin in the game' - how to signal commitment?
Hey everyone, Jason here. I'm gaffing a short narrative project right now shot on a V-RAPTOR XL with some beautiful SkyPanel X and Helios Tubes, and it got me thinking about my own feature film concept. I've got a killer script, a solid team including an experienced DP (who loves his ALEXA Mini), and we're looking to raise around $1.5M. The problem? I don't personally have the recommended 10-15% 'skin in the game' to put in upfront. I've been pouring my time and network into this, sure, but cash is king for early investors, and I'm coming up short there.
We've explored deferrals for key crew (including myself), and I'm even considering leveraging some of my lighting gear, but I'm not sure how much value that actually holds for an equity investor. How can I structure our financing stack or demonstrate commitment in other tangible ways that will genuinely impress early investors when I can't put up significant personal capital? What have others done in this situation?
