Open-Gate vs. 16:9: Adjusting Composition and Planning?
Hey everyone,
I'm finding myself at a bit of a crossroads with open-gate recording and how it impacts my on-set decisions. My current project, a narrative short we're shooting on a V-RAPTOR XL, is slated for a 16:9 delivery, but we're mostly recording open-gate for flexibility in post.
Historically, I've always composed strictly for the 16:9 frame, ensuring everything critical fits within those lines. Now, with open-gate, there's all this extra real estate top and bottom, and I'm not sure how much to account for it during shooting. I'm worried about things feeling too loose if I overcompensate, or missing opportunities if I don't utilize it at all.
How has open-gate recording changed your approach to composition and shot planning compared to when you were strictly framing for 16:9 delivery?
