Production Designer Role Post-Midjourney: Hands-on Artist to AI Creative Director?

Hey everyone, I'm Diana Ruiz-Perez, an AD/Producer, and I've been really grappling with something. We recently used Midjourney for concept art on a low-budget sci-fi short, and the speed was incredible. Our PD, who’s usually sketching furiously, was suddenly prompting and refining generated images. It made me wonder: are we seeing a fundamental shift in the Production Designer's role?

It felt less about their traditional artistic skill with a pencil and more about guiding the AI, making creative decisions, and curating options. Does this mean PDs need to become more 'creative directors' of AI, rather than just hands-on artists? What new skills do you all think this demands? Prompt engineering, obviously, but what else? Are we moving away from traditional art skills being paramount?
