Helping New ADs Get Realistic on Page Counts - Any Practical Methods?

Hey everyone, Megan Foster here, currently scripting a low-budget indie feature with an ALEXA Mini and a mix of KODAK and LEICA glass. We're seeing a common issue crop up in prep: the new 1st AD's page count estimates are consistently optimistic, especially for scenes involving more complex blocking or VFX plates. The director and I have tried walking through shot lists for similar scenes from past projects, pointing out how long certain setups (like a green screen comp on our last shoot, even with basic lighting like a couple of SkyPanel S60-Cs) actually took. It helps a bit, but it’s not really sinking in for future estimates. It often feels like they’re just going by the script pages without visualizing the on-set execution. Beyond just 'more experience,' what practical methods have you found effective for helping a new AD develop a more realistic sense of time estimation for different scene types?
