Doc Distribution in 2026: Beyond the Streamers?
Hey everyone,
I'm Priyanka Gill, a Line Producer, and I'm genuinely trying to get a handle on the current distribution landscape for documentaries. I keep hearing that streaming acquisitions have really slowed down since 2020, and frankly, my last two feature docs struggled to find homes with the big platforms. We went through the usual festival circuit, had some good buzz, but those 'big deal' conversations just aren't materializing like they used to.
I'm currently prepping a new historical documentary, and I'm trying to strategize its release properly from the outset. I don't want to just bank on a Netflix or Hulu anymore. What are successful documentarians actually doing to get their films seen and monetized in 2026? Beyond the dream of a huge streaming acquisition, what alternative distribution strategies are working right now? Any insights or experiences would be hugely appreciated.
