Production Designer role evolving with AI tools - seeking insight!

Hey everyone,

I'm Isabella, a Line Producer currently prepping for a sci-fi short. We're in early concept, and our PD is looking at using Midjourney for initial visual exploration. It's truly incredible how fast concepts are generated.

Historically, I've seen PDs sketching, painting, building maquettes, very hands-on. Now, with Midjourney literally churning out dozens of options based on prompts, it feels like the role might be shifting. I'm wondering if the Production Designer is becoming less of an artist who creates the image directly, and more of a 'creative director' curating and guiding AI to get the right vision across.

From your experience, especially those who work closely with Production Designers, what new skills are becoming essential for them in this AI-driven landscape? Is it more about prompt engineering, understanding AI's limitations, or something else entirely? Genuinely curious to hear thoughts on this evolution.
