Hybrid Soundtrack: Making a Sub-$1000 Music Budget Sound Unique?

Hey everyone,

I'm a location scout, usually wrangling permits and finding the perfect backdrop for my crew (we just got a V-RAPTOR XL on our last feature, which was a dream!). But I'm also producing a short indie narrative on the side, shot primarily on my KOMODO-X and an FX6 for some B-roll. We're obviously working with a shoestring budget, probably less than $1000 for all music licensing and composition.

I'm grappling with how to make the soundtrack stand out. My initial thought was royalty-free tracks, but I'm worried it'll just sound like every other micro-budget film. I've been experimenting with some public domain classical pieces layered with sound design from my Zoom H6, but it often feels disconnected.

How can a filmmaker with such a tiny music budget use a hybrid approach to create a genuinely compelling soundtrack without it sounding generic? What strategies have you used effectively?
