Balancing Passion Projects vs. Paid Work: What's Your Ratio?

Hey everyone, Omar Hassan here. I'm hitting a point where I'm trying to figure out the best way to divide my time. I recently steadied an ALEXA 35 for a corporate gig that paid great, but it wasn't exactly creatively fulfilling. On the flip side, I'm deep into a short film that I'm operating on for practically nothing, using my own AMIRA and a set of Cooke S4s I rented, it's a passion project, pure and simple, and I'm loving the shots we're getting. However, the mortgage isn't paying itself.

I've heard some talk about aiming for a 60/40 split, with the larger chunk being client work. I've been trying to push more towards passion projects lately, probably more like 40/60, and I'm feeling the financial pinch. I'm curious to hear from others in the community: how have you personally balanced your creative ambitions with the need for consistent income as an operator? Did you find a ratio like 60/40 effective, or did something else work better for you?
