AI Gen Video: From Animatics to Usable VP Plates?

Hey everyone,

I'm Gaffer Jason Fong, currently prepping a commercial. We're looking at some virtual production elements and the topic of generative AI video keeps coming up. I've played around with early versions for pre-viz animatics (useful for blocking, sure) but now with stuff like Sora 2 and Kling 2.x getting so much buzz, I'm genuinely curious.

Are these tools actually producing anything usable for background plates in VP setups? We usually aim for realism, shooting plates on a proper ALEXA 35 or VENICE 2 with our usual lighting package (LS 600d Pros, SkyPanel S60-Cs). My team and I have tried generating some clips just to see, and while the quality is miles ahead, I can't quite gauge if they're holding up under scrutiny, especially when we're trying to match lighting or camera movement in a real-time engine.

For those of you on the cutting edge, have you successfully integrated generative AI video directly as background plates for final pixel in a VP workflow, or are they still primarily a sophisticated pre-viz tool?
