Maintaining Visual Language on a Budget: Motivated Lighting Like Sicario?

Raj Patel here, been pulling focus for a few years now. I'm finding myself in a common situation on smaller narrative projects and could really use some collective wisdom.

I'm always striving for a strong visual language, and I constantly think about films with exceptional cinematography, like Sicario's motivated lighting, how every source feels natural, yet so cinematic. On bigger shoots with an AMIRA, full grip package, and dedicated gaffer, we can sculpt light beautifully.

But lately, I've been working on projects with a much leaner setup. Think a C70 or a V-RAPTOR XL, maybe a couple of Forza 720Bs and a few Helios Tubes, and often very limited pre-light time. My DPs are excellent, but the resources just aren't there for extensive rigging or a deep bench of specialty fixtures.

My question is this: without a massive lighting package or days of pre-light, how do you approach maintaining that strong, motivated visual language? What are your practical strategies for getting that 'natural but cinematic' look when you're forced to be incredibly efficient with minimal gear?
