Preventing premature set dumps - PDs, how do you design for deconstruction?
Hey crew, Gaffer here, Jason Fong. On our last indie feature, we used an ALEXA Mini, and I saw a lot of perfectly good set pieces just getting demoed and trashed because there wasn't a good plan. It felt like such a waste. I'm trying to wrap my head around what causes a production to 'dump sets prematurely,' as I've heard it called.
From my end, lighting often has specific needs for power and rigging that might make a flat difficult to reuse if not considered. But I'm sure it goes deeper. Are we talking budget pressures, scheduling changes, storage limitations? How can a production designer, from the very beginning, design sets with deconstruction and reuse in mind? Any smart strategies or materials that really help with this? Or common pitfalls to avoid? Really appreciate any insights.
