Union vs. Non-Union Crew for Tight Budgets: When is the compromise worth it?

Hey everyone,

I'm gaffing a short film right now, psychological thriller, lots of practical effects, shot mostly on an ALEXA Mini with an M18 key and some Aputure amaran 150c for accents. It's a passion project with a pretty tight budget, as usual. We're trying to keep costs down wherever possible, looking at everything from consolidating our camera package (just one Mini, no V-RAPTOR XL this time) to negotiating rental rates on our Helios Tubes.

I'm at a crossroads regarding crew. The director loves the look we can achieve, but the budget for a full, experienced union team is really pushing it. I've worked with some fantastic non-union grips and electrics before who really know their stuff, but also some who've needed a lot more hand-holding. On the other hand, a union crew brings a certain efficiency and problem-solving ability that's invaluable, especially when things go sideways.

When you're trying to stretch every dollar, how do you weigh the cost savings of non-union talent against the often undeniable experience and efficiency of a union team? What's your personal tipping point?
