Lav Routing: Athletic Wear vs. Heavy Coats, Your Workflow?

I'm David Kim, an editor, and I've been spending a lot of time recently on set, especially for some narrative shorts and a commercial where we’re using an ALEXA Mini and usually recording sound with a MixPre-10 II. One thing that always gets me thinking is lav routing.

Specifically, when you're miking talent in vastly different garments (say, tight athletic wear versus a bulky winter coat) do you find yourselves sticking to a pretty standard preset approach? Or does your workflow change dramatically based on the specific garment, fabric, and anticipated movement? I’m thinking about things like cable runs, mic placement, and even the type of mount.

I’ve been trying to develop a more consistent system, but the athletic wear always feels like a whole different beast compared to a heavier coat where there’s more room to hide things. Just curious about everyone's personal routing strategies here. What's your go-to?
