Zero Budget Sound Scouting: Composer's Pre-Production Dilemma
Hey everyone,
Andre Williams here, working as a composer. I'm finding myself in a recurring bind during pre-production, and I'm hoping for some collective wisdom. My biggest hurdle when it comes to early sound scouting for a project is always the budget, or lack thereof. Producers, understandably, often don't see the need to pay for a dedicated sound scout, especially on indie features or commercials where every penny counts.
I'm usually brought in a bit later, but I'm trying to advocate for sound earlier. However, without extra personnel or specific time allocated, it's tough. I've tried to just ask the DP or AD to snap a quick audio note on their phone while they're scouting for visuals (like for a scene we shot recently with an ALEXA 35), but it’s rarely focused enough to give me actionable intel on ambient noise or reverb. What usually happens is I get to post and discover we’re battling unexpected hums or traffic noise that could have been mitigated.
So, my question is: What are your best, practical tips for integrating a solid, sound-focused location scout into pre-production when you've got zero budget for additional personnel or time? How do you get that crucial sound info without adding to the payroll?
