Licensing: When to embrace limited terms/territories, and what's the exit strategy?
Hey everyone,
I'm Elena, a producer currently navigating a tricky licensing situation for an upcoming commercial project. We're shooting with an AMIRA, and the content is looking fantastic. My standard approach, and what all the 'best practices' guides preach, is to secure worldwide, in perpetuity rights, especially for key music and archival footage.
However, budget realities are hitting hard. For some critical elements, that 'ideal' license is just unaffordable without seriously compromising other areas of production, like securing top talent or getting that extra day with the SkyPanel X. I've tried negotiating, pushing for 'all media now known or hereafter devised,' but the numbers aren't budging.
So, my real question is: When is it strategically acceptable to opt for a limited term or territory license? And crucially, for those who've done it, what's your concrete plan for when that license expires? Do you re-negotiate, swap out the asset entirely, or let the content just disappear from certain platforms? Really looking for some practical, boots-on-the-ground advice here.
