Premium vs. Value Audio: When to Splurge, When to Save (especially with 32-bit float)?

Hey everyone,

I’m a VFX Supervisor, and lately I've been doing more hands-on location work beyond just supervising. I’m putting together a small documentary project, think run-and-gun with an FX6, a few small LEDs like Aputure 60x, and some lavs with an MKH 416 on a boom when possible. We're on a pretty tight indie budget.

My usual workflow for larger productions involves trusted sound teams running Sound Devices recorders and top-tier Lectrosonics wireless, and frankly, that's what I'm used to hearing. But for this doc, I'm trying to be smart about every expense. I’m seeing a lot of buzz around more affordable recorders, especially ones with 32-bit float, like some of the newer Zooms or Tascams. The idea of not having to ride gains constantly is appealing for solo ops.

So, my question is: For projects like this documentary, where is the line? When do you absolutely invest in premium wireless and recorders (like Sound Devices or Zaxcom) versus leveraging the power of 32-bit float in more budget-friendly gear? I’m genuinely torn on where to allocate funds for the best balance of quality and practicality.
