Limited Licensing: When to Compromise (and Plan Ahead)?
Hey everyone, Priya Sharma here, a working Colorist. I’m currently grading a series of short films for an independent client, shot on a mix of the ALEXA Mini and a LUMIX S1H. We’re deep into the music licensing phase, and the 'worldwide, in perpetuity' dream is clashing hard with our budget realities, as it so often does.
I’ve tried to source alternative tracks, but some of these specific pieces just work so well for the tone. I understand the ideal, but in practice, when is it genuinely strategic to say, 'Okay, we’ll go for a 5-year, North America-only license'? What factors do you weigh in making that call? More importantly, for those of you who have taken that route, what’s your actual plan for when that limited term is up? Do you just swap the music, try to re-negotiate, or something else entirely? Any real-world advice on this would be hugely appreciated.
