Burn-in Headaches: Syncing When Burn-ins Fail?

Hey everyone, Megan here. I'm hitting a wall with something that I know isn't uncommon, but still throws me for a loop on every project. We all know the dream: perfect burn-ins from the DIT or even the director's edits, giving us precise sound sync info for every take. On this indie feature I'm on, shooting with an ALEXA 35, the footage coming back often has burn-ins that are either cut off, missing critical elements like the jam sync timecode, or sometimes just completely wrong. I've tried verbally confirming takes with the DIT on set when I catch it, but that's not always sustainable during a busy day, and it doesn't help with issues I don't spot in the moment. How do you all practically handle these 'real-world' situations to still prevent major sync disputes in post? What are your go-to strategies when the burn-ins just aren't reliable?
