Navigating Limited Licenses: When is it 'Good Enough' and What's the Exit Strategy?
Hey everyone, Ben Castillo here. I'm deep into pre-pro on a pretty ambitious action sequence for an indie feature shot on an ALEXA Mini, and we're looking at some stock footage for establishing shots that's just... perfect. The ideal, 'worldwide, in perpetuity' license is coming in at a number that's blowing out our modest budget for this element. We've managed to secure some phenomenal practical effects work, and my DP is making the V-RAPTOR XL sing on our principal photography, but this footage is giving me a headache.
I'm being pushed to consider a limited term/territory license to save money. My gut says no, but realistically, when is it strategically acceptable to opt for, say, a five-year North America-only license? And more importantly, if we go that route, what's everyone's plan for when that license expires? Is there a standard operating procedure for re-licensing or replacing assets down the line, especially for something that's embedded in the final cut? I'd love to hear some real-world experiences.
