Audio Prep in the Trenches: Practical Compromises for Location Scouts?
Hey everyone,
Sofia Reyes here, a location scout often thrown into some pretty wild production scenarios. I'm usually dealing with logistics, but sometimes I'm asked to grab some quick audio references on my Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2, or even with a rental ALEXA Mini if it's handy, especially for things like ambiance or practical sound tests.
I know, I know, in a perfect world, every single audio file would be logged, alt-tracked, and meticulously tagged with metadata. But let's be real, often I'm fighting against the clock, dodging grips with a SkyPanel X, and the director needs something yesterday.
So, my question for the community is this: When 'textbook prep' isn't an option and delivery deadlines are breathing down your neck, what's your absolute 'good enough' strategy for audio? What's the minimum viable prep you do to ensure things aren't completely unusable later? I'm talking about those chaotic moments where you might only have a MixPre-6 II and a single MKH 50.
Thanks for any insights!
