Early Sound Scouting: Practical Workflows & Crew Integration?
Hey everyone, Yuki here. I'm a VFX artist, and lately, I've been thinking a lot about the benefits of getting sound involved earlier in pre-production, specifically location scouting. I've read some compelling arguments about how this can prevent major headaches later on, especially for us in post, when we're trying to fix challenging production audio. We've had shoots where we're battling constant hums from HVAC or unexpected road noise, even on what seemed like quiet sets during initial photo scouts. I'm imagining a workflow where sound takes an initial pass, maybe with something like an MKH 50 and a recorder, long before our ALEXA Mini or a Lighting truck with SkyPanel S60-Cs even gets scheduled. For those of you who've successfully implemented an early sound scouting strategy, what does your personal workflow look like? How do you effectively loop in the camera, lighting, and art departments without stepping on toes or duplicating efforts in the later scout phases?
