ACES vs. Log-to-Rec.709 for Indie Projects: When Simpler is Better?
Hey everyone, I'm Ben Castillo, a stunt coordinator, and I'm tackling a short film as a passion project. We're shooting on a borrowed AMIRA, with some FX3s for specific action shots, and we have a couple of SkyPanel S60-Cs for key lighting. My colorist keeps pushing for an ACES workflow, citing long-term benefits and better color fidelity.
Now, I understand the theoretical upsides of ACES. But, with a tiny, volunteer crew and a non-existent post-production budget (meaning very limited time for extensive color grading) I'm genuinely wondering: at what point does trying to implement ACES become detrimental to the project's overall quality, given the time and resource constraints? We’re talking about maybe a day and a half to get picture locked and graded. Wouldn't a well-managed Log-to-Rec.709 pipeline, perhaps with a pre-selected LUT, be more practical and efficient in such a scenario, ensuring we actually hit our festival deadlines?
