When Sound Scouts Go Sideways: Your Toughest Adaptations?
Hey everyone,
I'm Aiden Cross, a UPM, and I've been wrestling with an age-old production challenge. We all know the theory: sound scouts before camera scouts. It's brilliant on paper for catching issues early. My team always tries to do this, using tools like the MixPre-6 II during initial visits, even for simple recce shots with a Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2.
But then reality hits. We just had a corporate spot where the 'perfect' location, confirmed quiet by our sound mixer days prior, was suddenly next to a construction site kicking off heavy demo work on shoot day. We had our ALEXA Mini and LS 600d Pro all set.
It threw our whole schedule into chaos. We ended up having to pivot to heavy ADR and creative sound design in post, which was not ideal. I'm curious: what's been your most challenging experience trying to implement this 'sound first' approach, and how did you adapt when unexpected location issues completely derailed your ideal plan?
