What's the #1 mistake beginners make with 'cinematic' LUTs that wrecks primary corrections?

Hey everyone,

I'm Priya Sharma, a working Colorist, and I've got a question that's been on my mind. I'm currently grading a short film shot on a V-RAPTOR XL and I'm really trying to dial in a clean, but stylized, look. We all know the guides emphasize avoiding over-grading and prioritizing skin tones, which I always try to adhere to. But I see a lot of newer colorists (and sometimes even myself in a rush!) fall into traps.

Specifically, when beginners apply a 'cinematic look' LUT, what's the most common mistake you see them make that completely ruins their primary corrections and throws skin tones out of whack? I've tried to educate recent interns, but it feels like there's one pervasive issue I'm missing. Is it usually black point crushing, saturation shifts, or something else entirely?
