Applying Master DP Principles Without Copying, How Do YOU Do It?

I'm Antoine, a camera op usually running an AMIRA or sometimes a V-RAPTOR XL for bigger gigs. I'm prepping for a short film where I'll be DPing, and I've been really digging into the work of DPs like Deakins and Hoytema. There's so much to learn from their approach to light, composition, and emotional storytelling.

However, a common warning is never to just imitate. I've been experimenting on smaller projects, trying to break down why something works for them rather than just mimicking the shot. For instance, I love Hoytema's use of natural light, and I've tried to apply that thinking to a scene where I had just an Orbiter and a couple of LS 300x units, focusing on motivated sources rather than just blasting light.

But it's tough to discern true principle from aesthetic. How do you guys adapt these master DPs' principles into your own unique visual style without just copying their iconic 'look'?
