Transitioning to Scene-Referred and HDR: Pitfalls to Avoid?
Hey everyone, I’m a documentary filmmaker, usually shooting on something like an FX3 or my trusty Pocket 6K. I’ve mostly worked in a traditional display-referred Rec.709 workflow, but I'm starting a new project where HDR is a real consideration, and I want to adopt a scene-referred approach from the get-go. I'm keen to avoid common mistakes. I’ve been experimenting a bit, pushing an FX30 with a Nanlite Forza 500 II against a SkyPanel S60-C to see how much dynamic range I can really capture, and then trying to map that in post. It feels like a different beast entirely. For those who’ve made this jump, what are the most common pitfalls or beginner mistakes you see filmmakers making when they first try to move from a Display-Referred to a Scene-Referred mindset, especially regarding HDR? I'm trying to avoid those headaches myself and would love to learn from others' missteps.
