Director: Independent Feature Doc (Volunteer)

Documentary Directing New York, NY mid Budget: Meals + copy

Hey filmmakers, I'm helping a colleague find a mid-level Director for an independent feature documentary. This project explores the vibrant, unsung stories of a historic NYC neighborhood through the eyes of its long-term residents. It's a character-driven piece, leaning into observational storytelling with a hopeful, intimate tone. We are really excited about the genuine connections this film can make with audiences. As Director, you'll be responsible for guiding the creative vision from pre-production through post-production. This includes collaborating closely with the DP, shaping the narrative, directing interviews, and overseeing the edit to ensure consistency with our storytelling goals. We're looking for someone with a strong eye for visual storytelling and a history of working effectively with non-actors. You should have experience directing at least one short or feature documentary, with a solid reel that showcases your naturalistic approach to filmmaking. While we have some essential gear, having access to your own basic directorial equipment, like a monitor for reviewing takes, is a plus but not required. This is a volunteer opportunity, perfect for someone looking to build their feature directing credits on a meaningful project. We'll provide meals on set and a copy of the finished film. Shoot dates are flexible, primarily on weekends or evenings over 6-8 weeks this summer (July/August), roughly 10-15 hours per week. Looking forward to hearing from you!
