Directing for Documentary

Uncover the untold story of New York's underground street art movement from the 1980s to today. We are seeking a seasoned Director for an independent documentary feature, a compelling narrative that blends historical footage with contemporary interviews and observational sequences. This project aims to capture the spirit and evolution of a vibrant, often misunderstood subculture, highlighting its impact on urban identity and mainstream art. As Director, you will be responsible for the creative vision and execution of the documentary. Your key responsibilities include guiding story development, conducting interviews, directing cinematographers and sound recordists on location, collaborating with the editor during post-production, and ensuring the final cut aligns with the project's artistic and thematic goals. You will work closely with a small, dedicated crew to bring this impactful story to life. We require a director with significant experience (5+ years) specifically in documentary filmmaking, demonstrating a strong visual storytelling style and a proven ability to manage complex narratives. A comprehensive reel or portfolio showcasing your previous directing work, particularly on long-form documentaries, is essential. While we provide essential camera and sound equipment, familiarity with diverse documentary production workflows is expected. The shoot will primarily take place in various locations across New York, NY. This is a flat rate position paying $250 per day. Prep work is anticipated to begin in mid-September 2026, with principal photography scheduled for early October 2026, encompassing approximately 4-5 weeks of shooting spread over 8-10 weeks.
