Doc Director for Social Justice Project (NYC)
Seeking an experienced Director to lead an independent documentary production focusing on the impact of community-led initiatives in urban areas. This film aims to be an intimate, character-driven piece with a hopeful, observational tone, exploring how local organizations address systemic challenges in New York City. We're looking for someone who can craft compelling narratives from real-life situations and guide a small crew with a clear creative vision. This project is meaningful and will shed light on important social issues. Key responsibilities include collaborating closely with the producer to refine the creative vision, leading all aspects of on-location shoots, providing clear direction to subjects and crew, overseeing the editing process, and ensuring the final product aligns with the project's goals. While we have a strong concept, we value a director who can bring their own perspective and elevate the storytelling. We require previous directing experience on documentary or narrative projects, demonstrated through a strong reel or portfolio. You should be comfortable working efficiently with a small team and have a solid understanding of documentary ethics. While specific gear is provided, familiarity with standard documentary camera and audio setups is a plus. Shoot dates are approximately 15-20 days, spread across about 3-4 weeks starting in early November 2026, primarily in and around NYC. Prep work will begin in early October 2026. Post-production will follow, lasting several months. We expect typical 8-10 hour shoot days. Travel expenses within the boroughs are covered. Compensation is negotiable based on experience and commitment.
