Documentary Director, Mid-Level

Documentary Directing Los Angeles, CA mid Budget: Meals + copy

Seeking an experienced documentary director for an independent production shooting primarily in Los Angeles, CA, for approximately three weeks starting mid October 2026. This project is a poignant, character-driven documentary exploring the resurgence of traditional artisan crafts in urban environments. We're looking for someone who can find the heart in everyday stories and craft a compelling narrative with a visually sensitive approach. This is an intimate, observational piece, requiring a director who values authenticity and nuance over sensationalism. We anticipate a 10-12 hour shoot day schedule. Responsibilities include leading the creative vision, guiding interviews, directing camera and sound crews on set, and collaborating closely with the producer to ensure the story unfolds effectively. You will be instrumental in shaping the film's tone and structure during production. Candidates should have a strong portfolio demonstrating experience directing at least two to three short or feature documentaries, with a focus on human interest stories. A reel showcasing your directing style, particularly in vérité or interview settings, is essential. While we have basic camera and sound equipment, directors with access to their own professional-grade gear (e.g., a reliable cinema camera package, lighting kit) are a plus, though not required. This is a volunteer position, but meals will be provided on set, and you will receive a copy of the final film for your portfolio. We're a passionate, small crew committed to telling this important story.
