Micro-Budget Power Strategies: From Big Genny to Small Scale?
Hey everyone, Luc Gagnon here. My film school shorts spoiled me rotten; we always had massive quiet generators and expert electricians. Now, I'm DP'ing a passion project, shooting on a C70 with a few Forza 720Bs and some Titan Tubes, and our budget for power is... well, let's just say it's tight.
We're looking at smaller generators, but I'm really unsure about how to plan tie-ins efficiently without hiring a full grip and electric crew. I understand the basics of amps and volts, but translating that to actual on-set practicalities, especially with multiple smaller sources, feels like a minefield. I've considered just running off house power where possible, but that limits our light package considerably.
What are your go-to strategies for location power planning when every dollar counts? How do you balance reliability with cost, especially regarding smaller generator rentals and safe, efficient power distribution for indie shoots? Any practical tips would be hugely appreciated.
