Legal Protections on a Shoestring: Realistically, What Can We Afford and Prioritize?

Hey everyone,

I'm a Key Grip, usually working on projects with an ALEXA Mini or a V-RAPTOR XL, using lights like the LS 600d Pro and PavoTube II 30X. But I'm dipping my toes into producing my own micro-budget short. We're planning to shoot on a C70 with an amaran 150c for some key fills.

I keep reading about iron-clad contracts, legal reviews for every agreement, and all these robust protections. It sounds great, but with literally no budget for legal, it feels impossible. We’ve been using basic templates we found online for releases and crew deals, but I’m worried about what we're missing and what potential pitfalls we're exposing ourselves to.

What are the absolute, most critical legal protections a micro-budget filmmaker must prioritize, and how can we realistically afford or implement them without a legal team on retainer? Any cost-effective strategies for getting decent legal coverage?
