Micro-Budget Legal: How to Afford It and What's Most Crucial?
Hey everyone, Terrence Cole here. I'm a DIT, usually on sets with an ALEXA Mini or a V-RAPTOR XL, dealing with high-end post pipelines. But I've been helping out a few friends with their passion projects, true micro-budget stuff, shooting on a KOMODO or an FX30, often in their spare time.
I keep reading about the absolute necessity of robust legal contracts for crew, locations, music, and especially distribution. Everyone says get a lawyer, get everything reviewed. My concern is, how on earth do these micro-budget projects, scraping together funds for a few Titan Tubes or a decent 6060 lavalier, afford proper legal counsel? The fees alone could be half their production budget.
We've tried pulling templates online, but tailoring them always feels like we're guessing if they're actually solid. What are the most critical, cost-effective legal protections or documents you've found essential for micro-budget filmmakers, and how do you realistically go about securing them without breaking the bank?
