Recoupment Waterfalls: Structuring "Producer's Corridors" or Investor Incentives?
Hey everyone,
I'm Amara Okafor, a documentary filmmaker currently tackling the financing for my next project, a character-driven doc about an underrepresented community of artisans. We're shooting with an FX3 and an FX30, mostly run-and-gun, with some interviews lit by a couple of amaran 150c's. It's truly a passion project for everyone involved.
I'm at the point of structuring the recoupment waterfall and I'm genuinely trying to wrap my head around how to create a 'producer's corridor' or find smart ways to incentivize 'friendly' equity investors beyond just the standard recoupment timeline. I've seen some basic waterfall examples, but they often feel a bit rigid. For this film, I really want to ensure the team gets something back earlier if possible, and also make our investors feel truly valued for taking a chance on an important story.
Has anyone customized a recoupment waterfall in a real project to achieve this? What specific mechanisms did you use to carve out an early corridor for producers, or what creative incentives did you build in for your equity investors? I'm looking for practical, real-world examples.
