Micro-Budget Top Sheet: What Gets Cut? (Under $50k Projects)
Hey everyone,
Sofia Reyes here, a location scout usually on slightly larger projects, but I'm diving into producing a truly micro-budget indie film, think under $50k total. We're trying to put together our top sheet and it feels like every single line item is fighting for scraps. It's a huge shift from what I'm used to.
My question for those of you with experience making quality films on these shoestring budgets: which 'buckets' on a typical production top sheet do you find most often get severely compressed, or even completely eliminated? I'm talking about things like set dressing, specific crew roles, or even certain post-production aspects. Is there a common sacrifice many of you make, and more importantly, what's your strategy for still making a quality film when nearly every single penny is being scrutinized?
I've been trying to get creative with in-kind donations and leveraging personal networks, but I'm looking for insight into bigger structural cuts or priorities.
What are your go-to budget-cutting strategies without completely sacrificing the final product?
