Gaffer (Senior) for Vancouver Doc Feature

Documentary Lighting Vancouver, BC senior Budget: Deferred pay

Looking for a seasoned Gaffer for an upcoming independent documentary feature here in Vancouver. We're exploring the lives of local street artists, capturing their process and philosophy with a naturalistic, intimate feel. It's a visually driven project, so lighting will be key to shaping the atmosphere and highlighting their work without being intrusive. We need someone who can work efficiently and flexibly in various, often unpredictable, locations, from busy urban environments to artists' studios. Your primary responsibility will be to lead the lighting department, working closely with the Camera Operator (me!) to execute the visual plan. This includes designing and implementing lighting setups, managing an assistant, and ensuring all safety protocols are followed. You'll need a strong understanding of available light control, portable lighting kits, and battery-powered solutions. Experience with documentary work is essential, as is the ability to adapt quickly to changing scenarios. Please have your own basic lighting package (stands, flags, smaller LED units, diffusion, etc.) or access to one. Shoot dates are approximately 25-30 days over a 3-4 month period, starting late spring/early summer. Hours will vary, but we aim for 10-hour days. This is a deferred pay position, which we can discuss in detail, with a commitment to fair compensation upon release. Please send your reel and a brief cover letter outlining your relevant experience.
