Gaffer (Mid-Level) for Documentary Feature

Documentary Lighting Los Angeles, CA mid Budget: TBD

We're looking for a talented and experienced Gaffer to join our small, independent production team for an upcoming documentary feature based in Los Angeles. This project explores the fascinating world of niche collecting communities, with a focus on human connection and dedication, offering a unique blend of intimate interviews and observational sequences. We need someone who can thoughtfully shape environments and subjects to enhance our narrative and visual storytelling. Your key responsibilities will include working closely with our DP to execute lighting plans, managing lighting equipment, and overseeing the grip and electric team in the field. This shoot requires adaptability and creativity, often involving location-based setups (both interior and exterior) in varied environments. You should have at least 3-5 years of professional gaffing experience on documentary or narrative projects, a strong understanding of various lighting techniques, and excellent problem-solving skills. Please have your own basic lighting package (e.g., small LEDs, stands, stingers), though we will be renting additional specialized gear as needed. We're also looking for someone with a strong work ethic and a collaborative spirit who can contribute to a positive on-set atmosphere. Please provide a reel or portfolio showcasing your previous work. Shoot dates are approximate and will be scheduled flexibly over the next 4-6 months, averaging 2-3 days per week. Hours will vary depending on location and scene, but generally 10-12 hour days. Production will provide craft services, lunch, and per diem for travel days.
