Gaffer here: LUT Pipeline & CDL - Has your approach shifted with new tech?
Hey everyone,
I'm Jason Fong, a working Gaffer, and I've been wrestling with how our LUT pipelines are evolving on set. With cameras like the ALEXA 35 and even KOMODO-X bringing new color science, alongside constant grading software updates, I'm finding myself wondering about best practices.
Historically, it was pretty straightforward with a show LUT and CDL governance. We'd dial in a look day-to-day with the DIT, manage it, and send it off. But now, with all these new variables, I'm genuinely curious: how has your approach to 'Building a LUT Pipeline' changed in the last few years? Especially regarding show LUTs and CDL integration.
On my last feature, we were shooting on an ALEXA Mini, and it felt like we were constantly re-evaluating our CDL strategy to account for different lighting scenarios with SkyPanels and Orbiter units. Are there any specific new tools or workflows that have dramatically improved your process in managing these things from a Gaffer's perspective, or even from the DIT side that I should be aware of?
