Practical Lighting Compromises: Dealing with Reality on Set

As a drone op, I'm often coordinating with G&E on how practicals are being handled, and the gap between theory and practice can be huge. All the guides talk about perfect CRI, ideal dimming curves, and matching color temps perfectly. But let's be real, on a chaotic set with limited time and resources, that's often a pipe dream.

I just finished a shoot where we were using an Aputure amaran 150c and a few Forza 500 IIs, but the practicals were just... whatever we could find. Had to stick with cheap incandescent bulbs for a scene because the 'right' LED replacements weren't available, and dimming them introduced a noticeable flicker that even the V-RAPTOR XL was picking up. We ended up having to run them brighter than ideal to minimize it, then compensate with the other lights.

What's the biggest compromise you've had to make regarding practical lighting's bulbs, dimming, or color control when the 'ideal' just wasn't possible, and how did you mitigate it on the fly?
