Lav Miking: When the 'Perfect' Plan Meets Reality?
Hey everyone, Andre Williams here. As a composer, I'm usually locked away with my DAW, but I'm often on set for score playback and working closely with sound. I've been diving deeper into lav techniques lately, and while the theory is great for different wardrobe types, I know real-world sets are rarely 'ideal.'
I'm thinking about a recent indie short, shot on an ALEXA Mini, where we had an actress in a really delicate, somewhat sheer blouse. Our plan for a 6060 lav was quickly derailed because any placement was either visible or created friction noise with even the slightest movement. We ended up going with a boom for most scenes, but it wasn't ideal for coverage. We even tried taping the lav to her inner thigh on another scene, which worked for a static shot but was a no-go for movement.
What's a specific 'ideal vs. real-world' scenario you've faced with tricky wardrobe (like sheer fabric or a super noisy suit) and how did you adapt on the fly to get usable audio?
